Couples Counseling and Therapy
A healthy partnership often requires compromise. A loving partnership often requires sacrifice. With the guidance and support of a skilled practitioner, couples can work through many of the challenges and conflicts that were previously difficult to resolve. Couples therapy can help restore passion, compassion and mutual respect. Your relationship can become even stronger than before through couples counseling.
Not unlike Family Therapy, Couple’s Therapy involves examining each individual in the relationship and the particular problems they present within the relationship. The presenting problems are then analyzed and addressed in a non-confrontational and understanding manner so that each person has a chance to voice their emotions and concerns. This involves learning and implementing effective communication techniques, instilling or reestablishing trust, understanding the differing love style and language our partner needs, concerns regarding sexuality and intimacy, navigating through financial stressors, dealing with past grievances, and working through “irreconcilable differences” which has now become the catch phrase of many divorces and separations. This process works for many different couples including the LGBT community.
Addressing these concerns in relationships is pivotal, but also learning parenting skills and differing parenting styles is crucial for any family with children. Children in a family present myriad concerns that need to be adequately addressed, and it is not uncommon for the problems in a relationship to ultimately manifest in children. Many children unfortunately internalize the struggles their parents face and effective cooperation between parents allows for an overall stable and happy home.
Couple’s therapy is not only done to preserve your relationship, but in the unfortunate event this cannot be maintained, it is a useful tool in navigating a separation or divorce for the benefit of all parties concerned. Problems usually presented in separations are the division of responsibilities, resolution of conflicts, and working through children’s fears such as with fear and guilt. Finally, Couple’s Therapy also allows you to attain the peace of mind that can come from working with a 3rd party due to the difficult emotions that usually arise after deciding to separate.
